The Comic Geek - Comic Book Shop Talk

With not one but TWO Avengers Secret Invasions tie-ins this week, what have we learned?
1) Hank Pym, the real non-Skrull Hank Pym, is kind of a jerk. We also now know when & how he was replaced.
2) Janet Pym is a lush and kind of a jerk. Safe to say that she's not a Skrull.
3) Skrull-Hank has an agenda in giving Jan the new & improved growth serum. But what is he going for? I don't see the payoff, but I'm sure it is coming.

4) The Skrulls had something to do with M Day. But what? How? Marvel's got some serious 'splainin' to do.
5) The real, non-Skrull Spider-Woman never got her powers back. She's been a Skrull the whole time. I heard there's a Spider-Woman series coming out later this year, so... huh?

I am loving everything about Secret Invasion. I'm only reading the main title and the two Avengers tie ins right now, but wow! I can't wait for the next installment. If your wondering whether to follow Marvel's Secret Invasion or DC's Final Crisis, I tell you there is no comparison. This is the story to follow this year. Stay tuned here for more updates, as soon as they become available.

Secret Invasion: Who Do You Trust? is on the stands now. The bigger question, I think, is what have we learned?

We learned a little more about the Skrull Captain Marvel's motivations for attacking the Thunderbolts. He knows he's a Skrull, but he wants to do right. (Kinda like 3 of the final 4 Cylons on Battlestar Galactica.) I'm not sure why trashing the Thunderbolts is first on his list, but at least he's trying to do something good before the Skrulls whoop up on the Earth.

I don't know a whole lot about Agent Brand. She's a hot, green-haired chick who's in charge of the Peak. We learned that the Skrull have been playing her for years and she's none too happy about it.

Maybe the biggest thing that we learned in this issue is that the Spaceship Beast thinks that he is the real Beast. We don't know if he IS the real Beast, but he definitely believes himself to be. It is unlikely, but I'm rooting for him. Classic Beast is much more entertaining than Cat-Beast. Spaceship Beast makes a compelling argument for why the current-continuity Beast could be a Skrull. He abruptly changed his appearance, he cut himself off from his best friend, his sunny disposition has soured. He's not the same old Hank McCoy that we know & love. Could the Morrison-ification of Beast be undone by Secret Invasion? Maybe they could make Cyclops cool again instead of the majjor-league jerk he's become lately.

We learned that Marvel Boy is going to be playing a bigger role in the Invasion. I'm not at all up on this character, or the Cube, which is a prison which he seems to have taken over. Can't say this story really piqued my interest all that much.

We learned that the Agents of Atlas can kick some serious Skrull butt. They are packing some serious power and James Woo, at least, shows the will to use it to the fullest.

Just a few more days until the next installment of Secret Invasion. Join me back here on Thursday for another update of Secret Invasion: What Have We Learned.

Silver Age Redux

The Silver Age Redux
Is it just me, or does it seem like the current roster of writers over at DC Comics are intent on bringing back the Silver Age to the Superman comics? Supergirl, Krypto the Superdog, Turtle Boy… all wisely retired in the John Byrne revolution of the 1980s but snuck back into cannon by writers thinking as fanboys instead of as writers.

The Incredible Hulk Trailer

March 13th 2008 21:58
Tonight, the first theatrical trailer for The Incredible Hulk, debuting in a couple of months, was released.

It is about time! Iron Man has had plenty of coverage, but Hulk comes out only about a month later. They've left it a bit late
