Are the Skrulls really that bad?

An astute reader recently asked if the Skrulls are really so bad. Is the burning, cuss-inducing hatred that the heroes obviously feel for the Skrull legitimate? The heroes of the Marvel Universe seem quite unconcerned about killing a Skrull, even one who is defenseless and confused. But have the Skrulls done anything worse than dozens of other superbaddies?
They’re trying to take over the Earth. That’s bad. Galactus tried to eat the Earth and Reed Richards didn’t choke the life out of him. Hawkeye (Ronin) was so firm in his stand against taking a life that he divorced his wife over it, but he’ll kill a Skrull without a second thought. Black Widow, well, she’s a killer, but she’s in full-on “shoot first and ask questions if you survive” mode.
The Skrull have probably killed lots of people in their assault on New York, but the heroes hanging out in the Savage Land don’t even know that yet. They sent Sentry spiraling out of control, they invaded Asgard, and they crippled S.H.I.E.L.D., but what do the heroes in the Savage Land really know about it all?
So yes, Virginia… ahem, sorry… Yes, Cibbuano, the Skrulls really are that bad. The real question is, are the heroes all that good?
