Comics Commentary for February 13th, 2008

An awful, awful week for comics.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #550 (Marvel) - 4/10
As much as I usually love Salva’s pencils, I felt he was trying too hard to emulate Steve McNiven and similar artists. On the other hand, Marc Guggenheim’s writing bore no resemblance to that of Slott, meaning there is already inconsistency in dialogue and characterisation. Also, we get yet another totally contradictory depiction of the Superhuman Registration Act. I give up on Spidey, I give up on Civil War. *sigh*
CAPTAIN MARVEL #3 (Marvel) - 2/10
I don’t like the art. The story was hyped by Marvel as being unbelievable, especially the last page, and it wasn’t. It was both predictable and bland - the events of the last page are entirely believable; what they MAY symbolise is slightly more shocking. The dialogue was horrendous. I give up on this new CM.
FANTASTIC FOUR #554 (Marvel) - 2/10
Hitch’s art is only at about 10% of his top quality. Millar’s writing stinks. The character’s behave exactly as you would expect… if they weren’t the Fantastic Four. I give up on this new run of FF.
GHOST RIDER #20 (Marvel) - 4/10
Jason Aaron is a competent writer, but he has been left with a crappy premise and style to emulate. The artist is trying too hard - unsuccessfully - to emulate Texeira. I give up on this new GR arc.
NEW AVENGERS #38 (Marvel) - 0/10
Hideous art. I could not understand half the dialogue. An inconsistent representation of the Superhuman Registration Act. Not a single character behaving in-character. I’ve been on the edge for three years, but I now give up on New Avengers.
NOVA ANNUAL 2008 (Marvel) - 7/10
Great art, an -interesting- story, but a cover of LIES. The origin of Nova is NOT detailed within. LIES!
X-FACTOR #28 (Marvel) - 9/10 - pick of the week
I thought Messiah Complex was going to ruin X-Factor for me, but it turns out I was wrong. Same great story, same great art. Madrox is hot. Rictor is hot. I want Madrox and Rictor to be hot together. I don’t like Madrox’s DNA tattoo thing. I use small words ’cause I can’t stop thinking of ‘Madric’ (think ‘Brangelina’).
X-FORCE #1 (Marvel) - 4/10
The advertising slogan for this series was “The X-Men don’t kill. They aren’t the X-Men.” That made me laugh, because the X-Men kill quite frequently. Hee-hee. AWESOME art by Clayton Crain, mediocre writing by Kyle and Yost. *sigh*
Overall score for the week: 4/10

No matter how bad a week is comics-wise, if X-Factor ships that week, we can all be happy.
