Comics Commentary for February 27th, 2008

When the pick of the week only gets a score of 6/10, you know something’s wrong. Once again, I wasn’t able to get my hands on a few books I was looking forward to; but I did read a few by Dynamite and Avatar which, despite much hype, were far below par and not reviewed.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #35 (Marvel) - 6/10 - pick of the week
Nowhere near as good as recent issues - felt very much like filler, especially after the shocking climax of the previous issue. Epting’s art remains fantastic, but Captain America still looks like he is wearing a poncho. Not bad - just not what I have come to expect from Captain America lately.
KICK-ASS #1 (Marvel/Icon) - 2/10
JR Jr’s art is nowhere near his usual standard, but I am leaving that alone. What irks me is the writing - I -am- Lizewski. I have given serious thought - heck, I still -do- give serious thought - to putting on a mask and tights and doing good. It isn’t that absurd, people. However, Mark Millar takes what could have been an awesome idea and turns it into an excuse to say ‘Fuck!’ every thirty seconds and criticise American culture. I say thee “Meh!”
NEW WARRIORS #9 (Marvel) - 4/10
Grevioux has characters make references to MU characters and events they are unlikely to know about - while at the same time demonstrating his own lack of knowledge by inserting his own replacements for existing MU concepts. On top of that, the ‘mystery’ is not at all interesting - I only care about how Night Thrasher is -alive-. The art is not great, either; it can be difficult to tell which character is which. I would drop it if I was not a fan of the original Warriors, wanting to know how/why Thrash is still around.
SHE-HULK #26 (Marvel) - 5/10
You really should expect more from a book featuring a Froma, a Badoon and a Skrull. Seriously. And the artwork is too scratchy for my tastes. I’m really starting to lose interest.
TEEN TITANS #56 (DC) - 5/10
Geeeeez Kid Devil would be (physically) hot in real life. The issue was a tad too silly for me, and Tim Drake came across uncharacteristically as a jerk - but the art was OK…
THOR #6 (Marvel) - 2/10
Not impressed. The story lends itself only loosely to Norse mythology, and not at all to the rich Asgardian tapestry established within the Marvel Universe. While Coipel’s Asgardian clothing is pretty, that’s the only really positive thing to say about his art. I’m done.
WORLD WAR HULK: AFTERSMASH - DAMAGE CONTROL #2 (Marvel) - 2/10
1) Black Goliath is only in the book because he is black. 2) McDuffie, if he has -any- understanding of what he is trying to talk about, is hiding it pretty well. 3) The pencils and lettering are very 1993-ish, which I like, but many don’t. 4) Not a single character was portrayed IN-CHARACTER. (You know, except for those created by McDuffie, which are characteristically out-of-character.) 5) … I am not even going to go into how offended I was by the first page. Get a life, Nate.
Overall score for the week: 3/10

I buy everything Marvel except for the Ultimate books; I only buy a handful of DC titles, and the only IDW titles I pick up are those related to Transformers.
Even Fabian Nicieza thinks I am insane for spending so much money on comics.
