Secret Invasion 4: What Have We Learned?
July 11th 2008 12:13
Secret Invasion #4 hit the shelves this week. This issue was a little less explosive than the previous three, but still solid.
We finally see what happened to Mr. Fantastic after he was splattered all over the exam room. He’s being tortured/experimented on by the Skrull on a space ship in orbit around Earth, the same ship that Agent Brand snuck aboard in SI:WDYT (You can read about it here.
Skrull-Jarvis is still standing on the deck of a busted-up SHIELD helicarrier talking to Director Hill. No movement there, really, except that all of the agents protecting Hill are actually Skrulls.
Space-ship Phoenix and Space-ship Beast are revealed as Skrulls and summarily shot by Black Widow. Any hope that some of the space-ship characters were genuine was kind of shot down by the introduction on page one, which states that they are Skrull imposters. Which leaves Ronin wandering around the jungle with Skrullingbird.
The tease that Tony Stark is a Skrull is de-teased but not totally dismissed by Black Widow’s insistence that Spider-WoSkrull is just messing with him because she hates him. This is the first time in the series that a plot point seems week and artificial to me. I just don’t buy that the Skrull Queen is going to have her most hated enemy in her sights and… try to confuse him. Why not take him to her ship & torture him (see Mr. Fantastic)? I’ll give Bendis a pass on this one because the rest of this story has been so good.
Nick Fury shows up with his new Howling Commandos, shoots up the Skrulls in New York for a few minutes, then takes off again without definitively winning the battle. Why? I hope there’s a deeper meaning here that has yet to be revealed. Otherwise, this is just getting sloppy. It does reveal that Fury thinks Ms. Marvel is a Skrull. There is a Skrull imposter of her running around in her own title, so he can hardly be blamed for that. In fact, there are at least two Ms. Skrullvels running around, because there was one in the space-ship, too.
Question of the week: Why were the Young Avengers featured on the cover with Nick Fury instead of the New Howling Commandos? The Young Avengers don’t even appear in the book.
