The Comic Geek - Comic Book Shop Talk

A Call to Arms!

July 17th 2008 16:36
The Chicago Tribune is hosting a tournament to determine the best superhero ever & the Comic Geek Nation needs to speak out. The field has already been narrowed from 32 down to the elite 8. Superman and Wonder Woman are going head to head, with Superman holding an early lead. This is as it should be. The Spider-Man vs. Green Lantern matchup should swing (get it?, ‘swing’?) Spider-Man’s way.

The other two matchups have given me pause. The space-faring Silver Surfer is up against Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes, Buffy has fought her way into the top 8 superheroes of all time by beating… brace yourselves… Thor and Batman! Handily.

Greatest Superhero Ever?

Either Chicagoans are unnaturally attracted to Buffy, or Buffy fans have taken a page from the Ron Paul supporters’ playbook and are swamping the site. In either case, we need to take action. I like Buffy – loved her show but I haven’t read the comic. But come on, top eight? I don’t care about the Surfer, but she CANNOT be allowed to move on and beat out the Man of Steel. That would be an affront to all of Comicdom.

The fourth matchup is puzzling. Wolverine against… wait for it… Kitty Pryde.
Hulk-Buster Kitty

Kitty fought her way here through Catwoman and the Hulk. Yes, THAT Hulk. Not too bad for a character currently trapped in a giant bullet hurtling through space with no hope of rescue (until a new writer comes on board the X-books and decides to bring her back). The only possible reasons I can come up with for her presence in the top 8 are: a) a surge of girl power carrying over from the Buffy vote or b) a surge of sympathy for a popular character recently killed off in the comics. Honestly, I’m not convinced she deserved a place in the top 32, instead of, say, Storm. Then again, Popeye and Flash Gordon made that cut, too.

I remember Wizard doing a similar deal a few years back & the finals came down to Jean Grey and Thor. Both lost in the first round of this contest. Although, to be fair, that was about who’d win in a fight. This is about who is the greatest hero, which leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

You can vote here.

You have until July 21st to vote in this round, then it moves on to the Final Four. Vote early, vote often, vote SUPERMAN!
